ROXBURY, NJ – The Roxbury High School football team endured a difficult loss to open its season on Friday, a day that also saw losses for the girls soccer and tennis teams but victories for volleyball and boys soccer.
Playing in Hillsdale, the football team was shut out 27-0 by Pascack Valley. It was a non-conference game that had the Gaels trailing by 15-0 at halftime.
Early on, the game seemed destined to be a defensive struggle with both teams shutting down the other’s offensive drives. But Pascack Valley eventually broke through, scoring on a short pass which broke free and later capitalizing on an interception and driving down the field.
Roxbury halfback Tyler Doerr accounted for the majority of the team’s passing and rushing yards as well as being the leading tackler at linebacker for the Gaels.
One highlight for Roxbury fans: Anthony Tye made an amazing diving catch while blanketed by the Pascack Valley defensive backs..
During the battle, Kyle Haegele set Roxbury up well with several long kick returns, but the Pascack Valley defense was able to contain the Gaels who never really got anything going on offense.
The team will attempt to even its record next Friday when it takes on Sparta in another away game.
In its 1-0 win against West Morris, the boys soccer team brought its record to 1-1. The volleyball team is also at 1-1, having beaten Randolph 2-0.
The girls soccer team was less fortunate, losing its season opener to West Morris, while the girls tennis team lost 0-3 against Mount Olive in its first game of the year.
