ROXBURY, NJ - The Roxbury High School football team - shut out in its last two games - fared better Saturday, scoring 14 points against Morris Knolls in a competitive game eventually won by the Golden Eagles.
The Gaels had a fighting chance for much of the contest played in Denville under on a 60-degree day marked by a cloudless sky. Despite the final score of 31-14, which brought Roxbury's record to 0-3, there were a number of exciting moments for Gaels fans.
Trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, Roxbury got on the scoreboard with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Nick Mastandrea to Lucas Spitzer. Luke Schabel succeeded in scoring the extra point.
The Golden Eagles bounced back in the third quarter, making the score 21-7 on a 66-yard touchdown run by Patrick Kaiser. But Roxbury didn't quit; a 12-yard pass from Mastandrea to Spitzer and another good extra-point attempt by Schabel made the score 21-14.
Knolls got seven more points before the quarter ended on a touchdown run by Sean Beller and an extra point by Nick Carmagnola. The only scoring in the final quarter was a successful 31-yard field goal by Nick Carmagnola.
The Gaels next take on Mount Olive on Friday in a 7 p.m. home game.
