SPARTA, NJ – The Roxbury High School girls tennis team stumbled in its 2016 debut Tuesday, losing to Sparta 4-1 on Sparta's home blue courts.
The first singles match went to Roxbury with Casey Hascup defeating Isabella DeFilippis 6-1, 6-0.
Sparta took the other two singles matches. Sarah Dioneda beat Jade Manche 6-1, 6-1. Lauren Danko won over Neema Njoroge 6-1, 6-2.
Both Sparta’s doubles teams came out on top. Tatiana Estevan-Ingraham and Jillian Parks beat Sara Dischino and Sam Meneses 6-1, 6-0. Stephanie Chalef and Meghan Kilby defeated Sofia Martinez and Devon Foster 6-0, 6-0.
Roxbury Coach Peter Flynn has led the Gaels for two seasons. “We have a few new players so they are a little nervous for their first match,” Flynn said.
“Winning our first match, I thing we did pretty well as a team,” Sparta Captain Stephanie Chalef said. “I think we will have a strong season.”
Sparta Coach Jeff Hughes said the team lost most of their players from last year. This season “it is a lot of new players in new positions.”
The Sparta girls have a busy week. They will travel to Montville on Wednesday, host Newton on Thursday and travel again on Friday to play Mount Olive.
