FLEMINGTON, NJ – The Roxbury High School ice hockey team finished regular season play on Saturday by doing what it’s done for most games this year: Winning.
Playing at Aspen Ice, the Gaels defeated Hunterdon Central 2-1. The win left Roxbury’s pre-playoffs record at 16-4-0.
The Gaels and the Red Devils were tied going into the second period. Hunterdon Central’s Jake Stapert, with assists from Grant Martin and Daniel Cicala, scored first. But Roxbury’s Nick Zaragoza tied the game, assisted by Billy Hefferle and Dylan DeGraw.
That’s where the scoring ended for a while. Neither team managed to get a puck past the opponent’s goaltender in the second period.
But Hefferle, with help from Johnny Facchini, broke the deadlock with a goal at 11:31 in the third period. The Red Devils were unable to do the same.
Roxbury goalie A.J. Pisani made 25 saves. His Hunterdon Central counterpart, Noah Dominick, blocked 13 of Roxbury’s scoring attempts.
