MORRIS TWP. – The Roxbury ice hockey team won the school’s first Halvorsen Cup today, beating Madison, the top seed of the division, on the ice at Mennen Arena.
The Gaels’ 2-1 victory reflected tenacity, not only in the team’s victory over Madison but also its comeback from a season that got off to a rough start. The win brought Roxbury’s record to 14-8-3.
The Gaels’ defense shut down the Dodgers completely in the first two periods. Goaltender A.J. Pisani had 20 saves by the time the game was over.
Roxbury’s two goals were scored by Nick Zaragoza and Brendan Sanderson while Madison’s Charlie Cleaves found the net in the third period.
The Gaels will play Middletown South on Monday in a Public B state tournament game.
