ROXBURY, NJ – There was some police activity today at the Succasunna ShopRite, action that included Roxbury Police Chief Marc Palanchi chasing down a shopper.

The chief, along with Roxbury Police Officer Jonathan Edmunds, were participating in the store’s annual “ShopRite Partners in Caring Help Bag Hunger Day” event where local officials spend an hour bagging groceries as a fundraising effort.

The person pursued by Palanchi was not a scofflaw, just a shopper who accidentally left behind a bag that had been dutifully filled by the chief with purchases.

Other local officials who helped bag items for the event included Morris County Freeholder Heather Darling, Roxbury Councilman Dan Kline, Roxbury School Board Member Anne Colucci and Roxbury Councilman Richard Zoschak.

There will be another fundraising event at the store on Saturday: A food drive for Roxbury Social Services. At the 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. event, shoppers will be asked to buy some extra items to donate to the Social Services Food Pantry.

Kline, who noted he was a ShopRite grocery bagger during his Roxbury High School years, said today was his fourth year participating in the event. “It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “We appreciate everybody’s generosity.”

The officials were introduced to shoppers by the store’s cashiers. Palanchi said some people knew him and others did not. “I just tell them who I am and then I bag for them,” he said.

The ShopRite Partners in Caring program has donated more than $40 million to more than 2,000 charities since its inception in 1999, according to RoNetco Supermarkets, the owner of the Succasunna store.
