ROXBURY, NJ — Township officials today bid farewell to Bunker Pellek, the township’s fire prevention dog, who died Sunday.

Bunker, who came to be known by many children in the township during visits to schools for Fire Prevention Week, was 14 years old, according to a Facebook eulogy posted by the township today.

“Some people say it’s just a dog but it is NEVER just a dog,” said the post. “It’s a pet, a friend or maybe even a co-worker. For all of us here in Roxbury, Bunker was all of those every day.”

Bunker, whose most important role was detecting the presence of accelerant at fire scenes, spent many days in Roxbury Town Hall. His spot was in the Roxbury Fire Prevention Bureau Office next to his owner, Roxbury Fire Official Michael Pellek.

The post by the township showed that Bunker, whose official title was Roxbury Fire Prevention Bureau Accelerant Detection K-9, was loved by his colleagues at Town Hall.

“No matter what the day may have thrown at us, there were never any worries because a stare from Bunker and a wag of his tail made us know it was all going to be OK,” said the post. “From Day 1 as a puppy through your final day here at Town Hall last week, Bunker you were always the ideal co-worker… even if you did drool and shed on our favorite work clothes that just came back from the dry cleaner!”

The tribute revealed that the township employees know life at work will not be the same without Bunker.

“No matter what, you were always in a good mood, always upbeat, always eager to make us proud,” said the post. “So Bunker, if you’re listening, we are beyond proud and lucky to have known you; in fact many days we probably needed you more than you needed us ... You were truly one of a kind.”
