ROXBURY, NJ – The late Harold Weasner of Roxbury was one of seven U.S. military veterans honored this week by the Morris County Freeholders who awarded them with Morris County Distinguished Service Medals.

The medals were presented in a Wednesday ceremony, designed to bring attention to the arrival of Veteran’s Day on Sunday.

Weasner’s wife, Marie, accepted the medal while many friends and family members looked on.

The Weasners moved to Succasunna in 1961 after discovering the place during one of their Sunday family drives, said county spokesman Larry Ragonese.

They decided to buy a house in Roxbury after coming across “idyllic … Succasunna, with beautiful Horseshoe Lake and no stoplights,” he said. Marie became a physical education teacher at the Lincoln-Roosevelt School.

Weasner attended Indiana University, where he received a Bachelors’ Degree, and got his Masters in Psychology at the University of Virginia.

Weasner was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. From 1945 to 1949, he served on the USS Topeka, the USS Bremerton, the USS Chicago and the USS Turner, Ragonse said. He noted that Weasner’s World War II service took him to Guam, Okinawa, the Philippines and Japan.

“During the Korean War, Harold was stationed on the USS Robinson, a destroyer, from June 1951 to Sept 1952,” Ragonese said. Weasner later worked as an engineer for Picatinny Arsenal, staying there for 37 years.

“According to his daughters, Harold Weasner joined the Navy to see the world and learn to swim,” Ragonese said. “Dad’s experiences trying to be a swimmer provided family and friends with many entertaining hours of stories. “

He also noted Weasner, with his wife of 64 years and later with daughters, Linda and Karla, traveled the world.
