ROXBURY, NJ - Fifty to 100 turned out for Saturday's open house at VFW Post 2833 in Kenvil, an event designed to attract new members.

"The turnout was quite large," said VFW Post 2833 Junior Vice Commander Bob Mederos. He said eight veterans signed up to become new members.

"It's a start," Mederos said. "We have to assess it, evaluate it and come up with conclusions. We didn't get a young crowd, which was what I was really hoping for."

Mederos said about $200 was donated to the post during the open house. "That helps," he said. "Right now, our funds are very low ... We are about $2,600 in the red now and we have to do something to sustain us."
During the event, the post dedicated a plaque to U.S. Army Col. Claire Cuccio, who grew up in Roxbury and is now stationed in Hawaii.
