ROXBURY, NJ – The Roxbury High School volleyball team pounded its opponents from Freehold Borough on Wednesday to earn a 1st Round state tournament victory.

Playing at home, the No. 4-ranked Gaels easily defeated the No. 29-ranked Freehold team with game scores of 25-8 and 25-10 for a 2-0 shutout.

Roxbury’s Kassandra Matiz scored eight aces and 11 service points, Andie Ackerman had nine service points and four aces and Haley Cook racked up eight service points and three aces. Kate Shirkey made 11 assists.

The 20-5 Gaels next play 13th ranked Toms River East on Friday for Round 2 of the tournament with hopes of making it all the way to the Nov. 14 state championship match.
