RANDOLPH, NJ - The Morris Essex Tuesday Senior Softball League, which plays some of its games in Roxbury, recently held its 9th annual barbecue, an event that saw more than 200 players participate in a round-robin tournament before joining fellow athletes for an end-of-season picnic.

The league has been led since 2006 by Randolph residents Gene Stracco and Al Cheli.  Under their leadership, it grew from four teams to 15 teams playing in three divisions:  A, B and Slocum. There are approximately 240 players in the league.

To participate in the A and B divisions, a player must be at least 60. The Slocum Division includes players who are 70 and older. Cheli and Stracco said they look forward to eventually expanding the League to include a division for players over 80 years old.

Doubleheader games are played on Tuesday mornings starting the first week of April through the first week of August. Games are played in Randolph, West Orange, Montville and Roxbury. The league also sends representative teams to state tournaments, the National Senior Games and other tournaments around the country.

At the picnic, Cheli presented an Outstanding Sponsor award to Bobby Spiropolous, owner of the Randolph Diner, in recognition of the support he provides to the league. Cheli also thanked Russ Newman, director of Randolph Parks and Recreation, Jeanne Montemarano, the assistant director, and the staff and grounds crew from the Randolph Parks and Recreation Department for their outstanding cooperation in preparing and maintaining the playing fields throughout the season.

Randolph councilmen Al Napoliello and Mike Guadagno, Randolph Town Manager Steve Mountain and Randolph Mayor Christine Carey attended the picnic. Carey congratulated the athletes for their participation in the league, saying that she admired their commitment to staying fit and active. She also described the township’s plans to build a new park on Calais Road.
