ROXBURY, NJ — A person at Nixon Elementary School and two at Franklin Elementary School recently tested positive for COVID-19, but pupils at the schools were not in danger of exposure, according to school officials.

The Nixon case was announced in a Sept. 17 letter to parents and guardians from Nixon School Principal Danielle Lynch and Roxbury Schools Superintendent Loretta Radulic. The Franklin case was announced in a similar Sept. 18 letter from Franklin School Principal Lisa Ferrare and Radulic.

In the Nixon case, Lynch and Radulic said “an individual” who tested positive was last at the school six days prior to the letter.

In the Franklin case, Ferrare and Radulic said the two individuals who tested positive were last at the school seven days beforehand.

Both letters assured parents and guardians that “there is no concern of exposure” for children.

Cleaned and Disinfected

“However, in an effort to foster open and strong communication, we are notifying you so that you are aware,” say both letters. “The District is coordinating closely with public health officials and following CDC, state and local health department guidance in order to assure the health and safety of our community,”

The letters note that the district completed the “cleaning and disinfecting of all exposed areas,” but noted “the status of this situation is fluid” and being closely monitored.

In an email, Radulic today stressed the importance of people involved with the schools being upfront and honest if they feel sick.

“The most important part is that there was no exposure of the virus to any of our students or staff based upon the timeline and people's cooperation with staying home when they feel ill,” she said. “Please know that we are working closely with our local health officials to ensure appropriate precautions and notifications as we continue to monitor the health of our district.”

Roxbury schools are operating on a hybrid model, with all schools closed on Mondays – when all teaching is done virtually – and a mixture of in-school and remote instruction taking place the rest of the week.
