ROXBURY, NJ – A group studying the pros and cons of consolidating services in Roxbury and Mount Arlington is looking for people to replace two members who resigned, said panel chairman Craig Heard.
The 14-member Roxbury-Mount Arlington Consolidation Commission, formed last spring, recently lost founding members Chris Rogers and Maureen Castriotta, said Heard, who said they opted to leave due to family or personal obligations. One of the slots is a full-fledged commissioner post while the other is an auxiliary position.
“We’ve put an ad out to secure any new resumes and we also have resumes from the first filing,” he said. “I am reaching out to those individuals to see if they’re still interested.”
Those who want to participate will be interviewed in public by the commission, said Heard. “We’re hoping that can be accomplished in February,” he said, adding the goal is to have the new members on board before the end of March.
The panel’s next meeting is Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Roxbury Senior Center conference room on Eyland Avenue in Succasunna.
The commissioners are currently working as 4- to 5-member sub-committees and gathering information from both municipalities. “The subcommittees will examine the budgets and the history of actual expenditures for Roxbury and Mount Arlington,” said Heard. “They will secure various due-diligence contracts such as labor contracts, teacher contracts and sub-contracted vendors. They’ll examine all those documents and put together comparative statistics to see if there are any possible savings (in consolidating).”
But there will be many additional steps involved in the commission’s process before it’s ready to decide if consolidating any services, or all services, makes sense.
Heard said the commission hopes to be done with its work in June 2017. “We welcome the public to come to the meetings,” he said. “We all have sensitivity that neither Roxbury nor Mount Arlington should lose their identity … If we can’t show there will be savings to both districts, we shouldn’t be recommending consolidation.”
