ROXBURY, NJ — Walmart has started hiring people to work in the store it is building in Roxbury, the company said today.

It recently opened a "hiring center" at 450 Route 10 in Ledgewood, in a strip mall on the westbound side of the highway opposite the Ledgewood Commons construction site where the new Walmart Supercenter is being built.

Walmart said it plans on hiring about 400 people to "support" the new store. When it closed - and razed - the former Ledgewood Walmart that the new store will replace, Walmart said the old store's employees were temporarily transfered' to other area Walmart stores, presumably meaning they will be able to return to Ledgewood when the new store opens.

Walmart said starting wages at the Supercenter will range from $11 per hour to $19 per hour "for positions including department managers, support managers, food associates and receiving/stocking associates."

Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo said the new store is expected to open in October. "Bringing 400 jobs to the community is wonderful news for Roxbury," he said.

The 164,000-square-foot, $12 million store will serve as the largest store in the new Shops at Ledgewood Commons project replacing the failed Ledgewood Mall. The store will be open 24 hours, will be more than 41,000 square feet larger than the outdated store it is replacing and it will have many new features, including an expanded grocery department and "online grocery pickup" (OGP) lanes that will allow shoppers to pick up, from their cars, items ordered from home.
