SPARTA, NJ - The Roxbury boys lacrosse team's unprededented winning streak came to an end today in a loss to Sparta.
The Gaels fell 10-6 to the Spartans in a very tightly contested, and very cold, game that started as wind driven snow pelted the players. It took almost the entire first quarter for a goal that put Sparta on top.
The score at half-time was 5-3 in favor of Sparta, but the Spartans' lead was quickly erased by Roxbury with 2 quick goals to begin the third quarter.
The Gaels then (9-2) enjoyed a short time on top of the Spartans (9-1). When the frame ended, the scoreboard had Roxbury winning 6-5 and hoping to extend its winning streak to 10-1. The good feeling short-lived. Sparta went on a 5 goal scoring frenzy that thwarted any hopes of the Gaels clinching the competitive Rizk Division, an achievement that went to the Spartans.
Today's stats: Eric D'arminio - 2 goals and 3 assists; Chris Snow - 2 goals and 1 assist; Paul Shadel - 2 goals; Dave Biank - 1 assist. Goalie Colin Armstrong had 5 saves and Goalie Luke Rowe had 9.
The Gaels can clinch a tie for the NJAC Freedom Division on Saturday when they play Vernon (6-3) in Roxbury at 10 a.m. If the team can pull off the win, it goes for the division title against Kittatinny on Monday at 4 p.m. in Hampton Township.
