Dear TAPinto Roxbury,

Paige Monaghan who graduated from Roxbury High School is one of the finest soccer players to ever play at the school, holding just about every scoring record in girls soccer.

After her high school career, Paige went on to attend Butler University where she continued to excel at the collegiate level. This past spring Paige was drafted by Sky Blue FC, a professional woman’s soccer team here in New Jersey that plays in the National Woman’s Soccer League.

This past Wednesday I took my granddaughter Maggie to the Sky Blue game to watch play many of the players who were on the U.S. National Team which won the 2019 Woman’s Soccer World Cup this summer in France.

Sky Blue played the Chicago Red Stars in a very exciting game that Sky Blue won by a score of 2-1.

Paige Monaghan, who plays in the forward position, stole the show scoring both goals for her team. These were not just run-of-the-mill scores either as they were the first and second professional goals shescored in league play.

The first came as she received a pass from Carli Lloyd, a stalwart on the U.S. National Woman’s Soccer team, and then dribbled free of a defender and slotted a shot past the diving Red Star goalie.

Page’s second goal also came on a great move on a defender with just a few minutes left - and after the Red Stars had tied the game - adroitly lifting the ball past the goalie for the winning tally.

The Red Stars’ goalie, Alyssa Naeler, is just not any goalie; she happens to be the starting goalie on the U.S.National Team that just won the Woman’s World Cup.

The home crowd responded to both goals with a roar and great excitement.

So job well done Paige and keep up the fine wonderful play. Roxbury is very proud of you!

(By the way, if any Roxbury fans wish to see Paige play, Sky Blue has a few home games left and tickets can be secured on the team’s website).
