TAPinto Crushes Monthly Readership Record: 809,024 Readers in January 2017

TAPinto.net, a network of 61 franchised online hyperlocal news sites in New Jersey and New York, marked the beginning of 2017 with a record month of traffic in January.

January also marked the launch of TAPinto Newark, which -- out of the gate -- broke the story of a bishop being assaulted in a cathedral in Newark.  The article was picked up by ABC, NBC, CBS, the Associated Press and the UK Daily Mail, among many others. The video of the incident has garnered over 1 million views on YouTube.

TAPinto.net, which began in 2008 as an all-online local newspaper in New Providence, NJ founded by residents Michael and Lauryn Shapiro, is now the dominant player in local news. The network provides original local news reporting on a daily basis in more than 75 towns. It is growing while other media organizations are slashing local news coverage and laying off journalists.

For the month of January, TAPinto was read by more than 809,024 unique visitors, breaking its former record of 713,308 established in September 2016.

During the last year, TAPinto has had 5,545,995 unique visitors who've read 18,901,243 pages on the site, both records as well.

"TAPinto sites are locally owned and operated and do their own original local news reporting," said CEO and Publisher Michael Shapiro. "That local ownership and local reporting makes all the difference."

TAPinto provides the backend, training and support to its franchisees. "We've created a growing and successful network of online local news sites that has become a model for the struggling media industry," Shapiro said. "Our innovative model enables our sites to not only produce great original local news content but to also achieve record-breaking traffic and financial sustainability."

Shapiro said TAPinto is proving that journalism, at least on the local level, has a future.
"At a time when pundits are writing the obituary for the news media, we are providing a way forward that respects journalism's rich traditions while creating a sustainable business model from which everyone benefits," he said. "As we continue to grow, we are committed to improving local journalism. Thank you to our readers and our advertisers for your loyalty and support. We would not be here without you."

Private Schools Have Unfair Advantage in High School Sports

May 7, 2017

Dear Editor,

Yesterday's thrashing of the Roxbury Boys Lacrosse team at the hands of Delbarton was as unbalanced as the final score. A private school such as Delbarton can take students and athletes from all over New Jersey as well as from other states. Private schools are not bound by the same rules as public schools, unless you're Wayne Hills that is. But that's a story for ...

Roxbury Diner: Homespun Hospitality Through Thick and Thin

ROXBURY, NJ – Roxbury was being buried in snow March 14 and most businesses were closed. Not Roxbury Diner.

Roxbury Diner isn’t like most businesses. For co-owner Jimmy Dontas, a snowstorm – even a blizzard – isn’t a reason to suspend operations. Instead, it’s a call to action.

To many in town, Roxbury Diner – a TAPinto Roxbury sponsor – is ...
