It’s that time of year for squealing and screeching sounds.
But if they are coming from your vehicle, don’t be afraid – just get your car to a certified mechanic.
Are Your Brakes Screeching?
Nothing makes your skin crawl like that sharp screeching sound emitted from worn-out brakes. Brakes don’t last forever, and when you can hear them screaming for attention, it’s generally time for either new brakes or at least a brake pad replacement or rotor resurfacing.
Do You Hear Some Deadly Knocking?
If you hear a knock while driving your car, it could be coming from a failed connecting rod or main bearing. This can be serious and, if ignored, could be worse than a nightmare. Speaking of nightmares, if your engine begins to make a low tapping sound or your oil pressure light comes on - stop the car. This sound could be the start of the death knell for your engine. Low or no motor oil could seize your engine.
Something Squealing Under the Hood?
Could be the haunting sound of a belt at the end of its life. Your engine runs on many belts and the serpentine belt is known for making a ruckus when it needs replacing. There’s also the timing belt. If this belt is loose, it will make a squealing sound. Such a sound doesn’t always mean a complete timing belt change, it could just need some tightening or a seized pulley needs adjusting.
How About that Haunting Thudding Sound?
Thudding or thumping might be related to your tires. If your car is pulling to one side while driving on a straight road, then the culprit could be a misalignment which will cause a bumpy and uneven ride. Left unchecked this will wear away your tires unevenly and lower your gas mileage.
A Little Trick Before You Treat Yourself to a New Playlist
Who doesn’t love driving alone with the radio blasting our favorite tunes? But if you always listen to loud music, it can mask troublesome sounds coming from your car. Once in a while, turn off the radio and just listen. If you hear a noise you haven’t heard before – that’s a good indication that some kind of gremlin is lurking in your car.
