Three Sons at His Side, John Klein Makes Plumbing a Family Affair

ROXBURY, N.J. - Running water and a warm house during winter months are some of the most important amenities we enjoy -- and often take for granted -- in our homes.

With John Klein Plumbing & Heating, a TAPinto Roxbury sponsor, residents of Roxbury (and beyond) have a father-and-sons company they count on for reliable plumbing and heating services to keep the water flowing and the heat radiating.

Based in Landing, John Klein Plumbing & Heating brings decades of experience, concern for the Roxbury community and a goal of being around for many decades more.

Klein started the business when he was 35 years old, fewer than 10 years after he obtained his plumbing license and with three kids in tow. Having worked as a plumber for nearly his entire life, Klein has seen it all and he's taught his sons many tricks of the trade.

Klein and his sons split house-calls 50/50, but Klein said he likes to be on-site when work begins, even if he is not personally performing the service. It's his name on the truck, after all, and he knows the importance of building trust with people.

“People want to meet who’s coming out to the house and who’s behind the work,” he said. “They don’t want some salesman coming out and sitting at their dining table for two hours trying to sell them something like a boiler.”

Klein’s oldest son, Shaun, 32, grew up working with his father on weekends and - like his dad - has been in the plumbing business nearly all of his adult life. He said the “personal relationship” his father is able to build with local residents is what sets John Klein Plumbing & Heating apart from competitors.

“My dad always tells me; ‘I want you to do this (job) like it was your own house,’” Shaun said.

Klein said he tries to give back to his hometown by being active in community activities. For example, he donates to the Roxbury Arts Alliance, a volunteer-only group that promotes local art.

Klein is also planning the installation of a new plumbing system at Kenvil’s Veterans of Foreign Wars community center. He will work for free to install the VFW’s new plumbing in the coming months. Helping the veterans means a lot to Klein, whose youngest son, Steven, 23, is a member of the New Jersey National Guard.

The Morris County company offers a 5-year guarantee on all jobs and a 10 percent senior discount for services costing $500 or less. Klein is a member of the State League of Master Plumbers, and he said he prides himself on the quality of work he and his sons produce for residents.

“Workmanship is imperative,” Klein said. His customers (many of whom learn about the company through word-of-mouth recommendations from other customers) seem to agree.

“I called you for an urgent job at 8 a.m. based only on a recommendation from my neighbor,” said the Coe family in an online review. “Just hours later now ... done. Twice the work in half the time. Thank you.”

John Klein Plumbing & Heating is located at 611 Sandra Drive in Landing and can be reached by calling (973) 627-1993 or visiting the website.

They might want to rethink that.

When it snows, ...
