ROXBURY, NJ – Twenty years ago this month, Bob Idakaar experienced an unprofessional real estate agent. That’s when he decided to be a good one.
Idakaar, a lifelong Succasunna resident and TAPinto Roxbury sponsor, bought his fifth home in July 1997. A big event, one that could have been joyous, ended up being stressful and unenjoyable.
“I had a bad experience,” he said. “I figured, `I can do better than this.’ So, I got my real estate license.”
Idakaar, a Weichert Realtors associate with an office in Morristown, said he didn’t waste time diving into his new career. “I fast-tracked it,” he said. “The first house I sold was a million-dollar deal.”
Since that rewarding beginning, Idakaar has helped sell more than 700 homes. He is a member of four different real estate boards in New Jersey and helps people sell and buy real estate throughout the state.
He said he’s never forgotten the less-than-ideal performance of the real estate agents involved in that 1997 deal that prompted him to try his hand at the profession. The memory drives him to do the opposite.
I provide customer service,” Idakaar said. “I bring a team of people with me; experienced lawyers home inspectors, repair people, technicians. I bring all these other skilled people to the table with me to help the transaction, to help the client through it. I think I provide a little extra when it comes to that.”
The experts he offers have proven themselves to be honest and reliable, Idakaar said, noting his goal is to make real estate transactions free of unhappy surprises and stress.
As an example of this, Idakaar mentioned a couple of Chinese descent who recently chose him as their Realtor in the purchase of a high-end home. The couple spoke very little English, so – at the closing - Idakaar took aside a relative of the buyers and asked why he was chosen.
“He said, ‘Because they trusted you from the very beginning,’” Idakaar said. “That was quite an honor, because there are a lot of good Asian Realtors out there. They trusted me because I have nothing to hide. All I want to do is do what’s best for the people. That’s what I want. That’s where the reward is.”
Idakaar is also a skilled musician with a professional recording studio and four CDs of original music available at CD Baby and Amazon. He said money has never been his prime motivation when it came to working. “I’ve never been driven to do my job because of the paycheck,” he said.
The satisfaction of being in real estate? “I get to put people in their homes,” Idakaar said. “And then, when I get to sell somebody’s house, I get to set them on the next part of their life. To me there’s a reward just in that.”
His work in real estate has yielded some accolades. These include lifetime membership in the NJAR Distinguished Sales Club, meaning he’s made the organization’s “Circle of Excellence” every year he’s been in the business.
Over the past two decades, Idakaar’s career has not only been the source of his income, but also the source of many friends as appreciative clients invited him back for barbeques and parties. “Some of the very best friends I have - and I have good pile of friends - are people I sold houses to. There’s that bond and it’s kind of nice.”
