Outsmart the Scammers

Everytime your phone rings or you receive a curious email, someone could be out to
profit from your private information or try to lure you into a scam.

Learn how to spot and divert potential frauds at the Roxbury Public Library in a two
part-presentation on Thursday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m.

Edward Jones Financial Advisor Bill Clinton, CFP, CIMA, will team up with Dr. Jim
Kennedy, recently retired Bell Labs senior lead consultant and published author in
information/cyber/fraud protection, avoidance and forensics services.

“More than twenty people fall victim to identity theft every minute, and the effects on the
the victim can be far-reaching, said Kennedy. “If your identity is compromised you can
expect that there will be significant costs to you in time and money to set the record
straight — that’s thousands of potential dollars out of pocket to clear your name and
credit history, not to mention the actual financial losses incurred.”

Clinton added that many scams hit very close to home.
“We work locally with around 180 families. We have had several recent cases where
our clients or their close family members were either victims of fraud or almost fell
victim, “ noted Clinton. “I will be sharing real life, local stories about what fraudsters are
doing and how to avoid and report them.”

Clinton and Kennedy will be joined by Roxbury Township Police
Chief Marc Palanchi for an open question and answer session from these industry
experts. Attendees should come with specific questions or scenarios for the panel.

Both Clinton and Kennedy agree that senior citizens are often victims of scam artists.
“Seniors are vulnerable to identity theft scams because often they are more trusting,
less tech savvy, have more savings and home equity built up, and are less likely to
closely monitor their credit and financial accounts,” noted Kennedy.

Clinton added, “Scammers will try and use shock tactics on the phone or in the mail to
get a senior to make a rash decision and provide sensitive information which they will
then abuse.”

Clinton, whose Edward Jones office is located in Succasunna, has worked for some of
the largest wealth management and asset management firms worldwide. As a Certified
Financial Planner (CFP) he volunteers as a program mentor, providing support and
advice to aspiring CFP candidates. After receiving his Certified Investment
Management Analyst (CIMA) designation through Yale University in 2017, he went on to
teach the CIMA course at Yale.

Kennedy is an internationally known cyber/critical infrastructure security and business
continuity lecturer, consultant, and author. He has written extensively on protecting the
information and critical infrastructure for power utilities, seaport operations, healthcare,
financial and government agencies, telecommunications carriers, pharmaceuticals, and
other industries.

Some simple tools and resources can demystify potential cons.

“Scams are often publicized on TV news, published in local papers and there are web
sites such as
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0060-10-things-you-can-do-avoid-fraud that you
can use to stay informed,” Kennedy said. “The best advice is to seek out the aid of
someone you know and trust to investigate before you give out any information or
monies.”
Registration for each session is requested. To register, call the library at 973-584-2400
