ROXBURY, NJ — There will be no Lake Hopatcong Block Party this year due to "too much uncertainty and numerous hurdles," related to COVID-19, said Lake Hopatcong Foundation (LHF) Communications Director Holly Odgers.
Originally scheduled to take place May 9, the annual festival at Hopatcong State Park was postponed by the Foundation in March as the coronavirus pandemic prompted the shutdowns of schools, businesses and events.
However, in announcing the postponement, the Landing-based group floated the possibility of having the Block Party in October. In a statement on Wednesday, Odgers said the organization has given up on that idea.
"While things have greatly improved in New Jersey, we still, unfortunately, face much uncertainty and numerous hurdles, including obtaining the permits needed and being able to reasonably transport visitors to and from the park," she explained. "Since our top priority is the safety of our community, as well as everyone involved in the Block Party, it has become clear we should not move forward with plans for the event this year."
The Block Party joins a long list of Roxbury area community events canceled this year because of COVID-19 including the township Memorial Day Parade, the St. Therese Carnival, the township Beach Blast, the Kids Tri Harder Triathlon, Olde Suckasunny Day and the Taste of Roxbury.
"The Lake Hopatcong Block Party is one of our favorite days of the year, so we're deeply disappointed we won't be able to offer this unique opportunity, in 2020, to celebrate Lake Hopatcong life at Hopatcong State Park," said Odgers.
She said the Foundation thanks its Block Party planning team members, "for their dedication and willingness to adjust and persevere through these tumultuous times."
Odgers also said the Foundation staffers "truly sympathize with all the vendors and visitors who were counting on being part of this event and vow to keep working toward a better and brighter Block Party when, once again, we'll all be able to gather safely."
