ROXBURY, NJ – A Berkeley Heights couple hopes to open in Succasunna a luxury daycare facility and hotel for dogs, a place where some rooms will have plush beds and TVs tuned to Animal Planet.
If granted approval by the Roxbury Planning Board, the proposed K9 Resorts Daycare & Luxury Hotel will be built on property now housing the Iron Hills Animal Hospital on Route 10 East. Plans call for demolition of the existing buildings on the site.
The applicants, Debbie and Gary Hom, appeared Wednesday before the planning board and are expected to return in two weeks for a second meeting. “We won’t buy the property if they don’t approve the project,” Debbie Hom said today, noting board members appeared to like the idea.
“Yesterday was our first meeting with the board and I think it went very well,” Hom said. “They’re a good group of people.”
K9 Resorts Daycare and Luxury Hotels is a Fanwood-based chain of franchised facilities with about 50 locations, according to its website. Hom said she and her husband got the idea for becoming a franchisee after using the Madison facility to board their dog.
“That’s how we got to know the brand, and we really liked it,” she said. “Our dog wasn’t getting sick (after staying there). We like their whole policy.”
The proposed Roxbury site will have a one story, 6,960-square-foot building and a 3,000-square-foot outdoor play area. It will employ up to 14 people and be capable of holding 124 dogs per day, according to plans.
The facility’s fanciest rooms, called “luxury suites,” would be 8-feet by 8-feet, have glass privacy doors, feature “a sound-resistant environment for ultimate comfort and relaxation,” include televisions tuned to Animal Planet, have windows with outdoor views and be equipped with plush bedding, according to the company.
The indoor and outdoor play areas will have a special artificial turf that is regularly disinfected. Hom said she likes the fact that dogs can participate in “play groups” all day long, if desired.
Property records show the existing 2-story building and property are owned by Iron Hills Veterinary Hospital veterinarians Brian Colquhoun and Michael Aromando. They bought the land and building in 2008 for $705,000.
