ROXBURY, NJ - Six months after contractors began removing the walls of the former Walmart store in Ledgewood, the walls of a new Walmart Supercenter at the site have risen in their place.

Walmart hopes to have the 164,000-square-foot store open for business by autumn. The company received a building permit in September for the $12 million Supercenter, which will serve as the largest store in the new Shops at Ledgewood Commons project replacing the failed Ledgewood Mall.

Several members of the Roxbury Township Council on Tuesday expressed excitement about the fact that new construction at the site has begun, despite delays that had some people doubting the project would become a reality,

The new Walmart, to be open 24 hours, will be more than 41,000 square feet larger than the outdated store it is replacing and it will have many new features, including an expanded grocery department and "online grocery pickup" (OGP) lanes that will allow shoppers to pick up, from their cars, items ordered from home.

Work is also taking place elsewhere at the 47-acre site as other contractors build out Ledgewood Commons, a project that is, in part, converting the former indoor mall into a shopping center with no interior connections between stores.

The Marshall’s, Ashley Furniture, Men’s Wearhouse, Barnes & Noble, Red Lobster, Wendy’s and Lemon Tree Family Salon stores are expected to remain at the 470,000-square-foot shopping center. However, the Barnes & Noble will move from its current structure into the building that formerly housed the Ledgewood Sports Authority.

Among other entities expected to open businesses in Ledgewood Commons are Ulta, Five Below, 24-Hour Fitness, DSW, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Panda Express Chinese Kitchen, Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Starbucks.

Construction has yet to begin on the creation of a left-turn lane onto Mary Louise Avenue from westbound Route 10. Township officials on Tuesday said the groundwork for that construction is underway as evidenced by markers showing the location of underground utilities.
