ROXBURY, NJ - Roxbury High School students in the Culinary Arts I classes recently used the knowledge and skills learned in class to develop an ice cream flavor reflective of their local community. Students designed the flavors and created recipes that paid tribute to the many special parts of Roxbury Township.
“The students developed each flavor that represented an important place or part of the local community past and present,” said one of the Culinary Arts I teachers, Laura Richards.
Following the creations, Richards reached out to Cliff’s Homemade Ice Cream in Ledgewood and Peter Freund, one of the owners of Cliff’s, agreed to review the flavors the students created and select three of the best.
The three flavors selected were Auto-Torium Drive-In Delight, Factory Crunchand Vintage Cherry Soda. Freund graciously offered to feature the winning flavor all summer at Cliff’s.
Let the voting begin…
The Roxbury School District then put out an online survey in which people could vote for their favorite of the three. The voting not only allowed community members to vote for their favorite, news of the contest traveled through newspapers, online forums, social media and spread to towns across New Jersey.
“People from other towns began to learn about the Roxbury community by participating in the voting,” said Richards.
And the results are in…
In less than two weeks, close to 2,000 people cast their vote for their favorite flavor. In the end, Auto-Torium Drive-In Delight received the most votes. This retro-inspired flavor was created by a team of four young ladies: Freshman Adriana Baker, Morgan Heddy and Justine Stubbs along with sophomore Kaitlyn Otto.
“The ice cream has darker colors representing the night time when you would go to the drive-in movie theater," said Richards. "Chocolate ice cream is the base with Oreos, cookie dough and chocolate fudge swirled throughout. This flavor was by far the most popular with voters.”
Fifty-two percent of the voters chose this flavor followed behind by Factory Crunch and Vintage Cherry Soda.
Freund came Thursday morning to share samples of the winning flavor with the class.
Cliff’s Homemade Ice Cream will feature this special flavor throughout the summer and you can pre-order gallons and pints by picking up an order form from the store.
