ROXBURY, NJ - Roxbury High School senior James Morley won the Best Speaker of the Year Award for the third year in a row at the 2018 Northwest Debate League Championships.
The event was hosted by the Roxbury debate team on Feb. 23 at the high school. Roxbury was the defending champions.
Morley was the first student in league history to win three consecutive times.
Seniors Anavil Patel and Storm Moeller sealed Roxbury’s domination of the individual speaker competition as Roxbury took three of the five best speaker awards for the entire 2017/2018 season.
At the championship, competitors argued the national resolution: The United States federal government should substantially increase its funding and/or regulation of elementary and/or secondary education in the United States. The Roxbury Affirmative team was placed second for the entire season.
Both the Affirmative and Negative teams took the equivalent of a bronze medal placing third overall for the day as their classmates, parents, and teachers cheered them to victory.
“Looking ahead, junior Chris Lange is ready to take the helm as debate captain for the 2018/2019 season with recruiting new talent to expand the program as his number one goal," said Debate Team Advisor Lisa Heddy.
