ROXBURY, NJ – During summer, when school's gone and so are school lunches, many of Roxbury's less fortunate parents rely on the Roxbury Social Services Food Pantry to provide snacks for children at day camp.
In turn, the Food Pantry relies on donations from the community to keep its snack supply replenished.
The Roxbury Rotary Club is doing its part to help with that: The club is urging people to participate in a 6-day-long food drive that starts tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 10).
“Please consider helping your less advantaged neighbors,” said Roxbury Rotary Club President Steve Alford in an online post that mentioned the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. “After the horrendous weekend our country endured, let us come together as a strong community and help our fellow humans.”
The club’s food drive kicks off at 11 a.m. in front of Valley Pharmacy on Route 10 East in Succasunna. Rotary Club members will be there until 3 p.m. collecting donations, Alford said.
After that, people can bring donations into the pharmacy from Sunday through Thursday, he said. Roxbury Diner, a TAPinto Roxbury sponsor, is also helping. It will accept donations for the Food Pantry on those days too.
“Social Services is also in need of younger children’s back packs and dry erase markers for back to school,” Alford added. “Let’s show Roxbury how much everyone cares!"
Lots of Local Help
Roxbury Social Services Department Director Janet Wald said other businesses and organizations in the township have been helping to keep the Food Pantry up and running. For example, Ashley’s Farms donated corn, the Roxbury Racers swim team donated food, Ledgewood Baptist Church “did a huge food drive,” the Roxbury Police Department gathered items, as did Suburban Furniture, and there will be gift cards coming from the organizers of the Roxbury Community 5K race, she said.
Wald is urging people to show up at the Social Services headquarters – at 72 Eyland Ave., in Succasunna – on Aug. 24 to check out its “huge rummage sale” of items that have been donated. She said all money raised at the sale, scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be used for Social Services efforts, including the Food Pantry.
