ROXBURY, NJ – Noting there are people “living in their cars and the woods here in Roxbury,” the Friends of Roxbury Social Services is asking for donations to help provide emergency shelter for the indigent this winter.
The non-profit organization, which raises money to support Roxbury Social Services, is hoping to collect $5,000 by Christmas.
“Mother Nature has dropped the first major snow as temperatures are announcing winter is here to stay,” said the group on Facebook. “On those cold, wet, snowy nights, those of us fortunate enough share a good meal and curl up with family. Everyone wants to feel safe and warm; unfortunately, some of our fellow residents have no place to call home.”
Roxbury Social Services provides hotel rooms for the homeless during extremely cold periods, but doing so gets costly, said the Friends group.
“One night at a local hotel for a homeless person is $50, while a week for a homeless family costs $430,” said the Friends. “County, state and federal agency assistance can take weeks to begin. In the meantime, Roxbury Social Services aids in filling the gaps with your and the community's donations.”
The campaign began two days ago as the township was battered with heavy snow and sub-freezing temperatures. So far, the group’s effort has raised nearly $800.
“Yes, we have residents living in their cars and the woods here in Roxbury,” noted the organization. “During those abysmal nights, our police encourage the homeless to accept emergency shelter. Through donations, Roxbury Social Services provides this temporary emergency shelter … Winter storms like the one we are experiencing today creates even more challenges for many of the families we serve.”
