Roxbury Gives OK to Horseshoe Lake Paddling Rentals

Roxbury Mayor and Council discuss Horseshoe Lake kayak, paddleboard and canoe rental deal

ROXBURY, NJ – Roxbury officials agreed Tuesday to allow Ramsey Outdoor to rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboards for use on Horseshoe Lake.

The Roxbury Mayor and Council unanimously approved the deal, a proposal raised several months ago but delayed because Roxbury Township Attorney Anthony Bucco was not given the paperwork to review until last week.

Ramsey Outdoor, which has a store in Succasunna, hoped to begin renting the equipment before Memorial Day. In an interview last week, company owner Stuart Levine expressed concern about being able to get the program up and running in time to make it worthwhile this summer, due to the township delay.

However, Levine today said Ramsey Outdoor will give it a shot.

“We certainly are going to honor our contract and we are going to go forward,” he said. “We’re a little bit behind in terms of timing, but we are going to put the pedal to the metal and hopefully have people on the water soon.”

Levine said he’d not been contacted by Roxbury officials and didn’t know the council was preparing to vote on the contract. “Nobody mentioned it,” he said. “We haven’t had any verbal contact, for sure … We hope to be in contact soon so we can have some formal talks and go ahead.”

The proposal was brought before the council at the Tuesday meeting by new Roxbury Township Manager John Shepherd who said Bucco had completed a “legal review” and found no major issues, a position confirmed at the meeting by Bucco.

Although the council voted unanimously to approve the contract, Roxbury Mayor Mark Crowley said he was concerned about the appearance of a container Ramsey plans to keep at the site in which it will store they kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. “We want the storage unit to be presentable,” Crowley said. “We don’t want a rusty looking piece of junk out there.”

Levine said Ramsey will “find a place to put the container so it won’t be unsightly,” adding, “Maybe it can be camouflaged by some bushes and trees, depending on where they want us to put it.”

He said he wasn’t sure when his company will be ready to launch the rentals. Ramsey needs to buy the kayaks, paddleboards and canoes, find staffers to work the rental booth, secure the storage container and make other preparations.

“We’re going to be chasing it all, at this point,” Levine said. “I think we can do it. I think we have enough resources that we can make it happen, but I’m not giving a timeframe.”
