Roxbury Library Director Resigns

ROXBURY, NJ – Roxbury Public Library Director Will Porter announced his resignation on Wednesday and said he will leave the post July 17.

Porter, 41, said he found another library position that was a "great opportunity," but he would only say it is elsewhere in New Jersey and will not require him to move from his home in Newton. Porter, who earns about $85,000, has been in charge of the Roxbury library for about five years.

He had only good things to say about the Roxbury library, its trustees, the Roxbury Mayor and Council and the residents of the township. “This job was really a perfect fit for me,” Porter said, noting he left a branch librarian position in Newton to take the Roxbury job.

“It’s really been a wonderful experience here,” Porter said. “This is a great group to work with and that’s been a real blessing.”

Porter pointed to many improvements accomplished during his tenure. These include new carpeting, tile, desks and computers, he said.

The library, funded primarily through municipal taxes, has an annual budget of about $1.15 million. That equates to about $40 per person per year, he noted. Porter managed a staff of 21, with most of the library workers being part-time employees.

“I am delighted to have this new opportunity, but the board of trustees and the staff here are wonderful and it’s really sad to be leaving them,” Porter commented.

He said he will urge the trustees to hire an interim director, possibly a retired former library director, to run the facility while it conducts an “extensive search” for his successor.

In his letter of resignation, Porter said the library trustees should be proud of the things that were done during his tenure. "It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with you all for the past five years," he wrote. "I take great pride in the things we have accomplished in that time, and firmly believe all of you should  too. Thanks to each of you for your support, your commitment to the Library, your ideas, and your focus on serving the community."
