Great Response for Upcoming Layups 4 Life Basketball Tournament in Roxbury

ROXBURY, NJ – The upcoming Layups 4 Life basketball tournament in Roxbury is on track to raise more money than ever for cancer research, according to its founder.

So far, more than 30 teams signed-up and registered to play in the 3-on-3 tournament taking place April 29 at Roxbury High School, said Dan Exter, who created the tournament in 2015. The event raises money to help fund cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), the facility that successfully treated Exter, a Roxbury High School graduate, when he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013.

“As of today we have raised over $14,000,” Exter said in an email on April 23. “We are on track to raise $15,000 by event day, which would be an all-time fundraising high leading into our 3v3 tournament.”

In its first year, Layups 4 Life raised about $10,000 and last year the amount exceeded $18,000, Exter said. “To date Layups 4 Life has raised over $30,000 for cancer research and clinical trials,” he noted. “We have made contributions to various departments at MSKCC including pediatric cancer research, bone marrow and leukemia research. In 2016 we supported a doctor and his research with a $10,000 contribution to the bone marrow research department, providing him with the necessary funds to proceed with his research.”

Included in the fundraising are raffles and silent auction items. Exter said more than 40 items have been donated including a New York Giants football helmet signed by Odell Beckham Jr., a signed jersey from NBA All-Star Steph Curry, a signed photo of New York Knicks Kristaps Prozingis, New York Yankees tickets, Somerset Patriots tickets, NYCFC tickets, Rutgers football tickets, tickets to see the Blue Man Group, tickets to a show at the NJPAC, tickets to a show at the MPAC and more.

He said there will be food on sale, provided by Gusto 46 Trattoria and Sandwiches Unlimited Lunchbox, a TAPinto Roxbury Sponsor. TAPinto Roxbury is a media sponsor of Layups 4 Life.

Exter said he is looking forward to “a fun day for the family, with a DJ playing music, basketball, food, prizes and of course an opportunity to support a great cause.”

For the first time this year, the tournament will be open to players as young as 13.

Seize The Moment Now - Change Your Oil - Or Seize Your Engine Later

I’m concerned.  After 30 years of repairing and maintaining cars, I’m seeing a disturbing trend: Too many people are waiting too long to change their oil.

Manufacturers are lulling the driving public into thinking their cars are practically maintenance free; that synthetic oil barely needs changing and there's no problem waiting 10,000 ...

The Banking Industry is the Frontline for Protecting the Elderly from Financial Abuse

June 9, 2017

Older Americans are increasingly becoming targets for fraud and financial exploitation. Persons over the age of 50 control more than 70% of the nation’s wealth. Many seniors do not realize the value of their assets (particularly homes that have appreciated markedly).*

Fraudsters target older Americans because they may be experiencing cognitive decline, limited mobility or other ...

Roxbury Diner: Homespun Hospitality Through Thick and Thin

ROXBURY, NJ – Roxbury was being buried in snow March 14 and most businesses were closed. Not Roxbury Diner.

Roxbury Diner isn’t like most businesses. For co-owner Jimmy Dontas, a snowstorm – even a blizzard – isn’t a reason to suspend operations. Instead, it’s a call to action.

To many in town, Roxbury Diner – a TAPinto Roxbury sponsor – is ...
