As the coronavirus pandemic has grown, the Red Cross has experienced an increase in blood drive cancellations across the country due to concerns about congregating at workplaces, college campuses and schools.

Blood donation is essential for hospitals to be able to take care of those who need it. This blood shortage could impact patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer. The demand for blood products (blood, platelets and plasma) is constant, even when the world isn’t in the midst of a global pandemic.

A Safe Process

“There is no known end date in this fight against coronavirus and the Red Cross needs the help of blood and platelet donors and blood drive hosts to maintain a sufficient blood supply for weeks to come,” said Gail McGovern, president and chief executive office, American Red Cross.

“We understand why people may be hesitant to come out for a blood drive, but we want to reassure the public that blood donation is a safe process and that we have put additional precautions in place at our blood drives to protect the health and safety of our donors and staff" she said.

Kellie Ann Keyes, the coordinator of the blood drive, said the organizers are excited to be hosting the event. "If anyone is wondering what they can do to help during this pandemic, donating blood is a great way to give back.” said  Keyes.
