Cops Give the Skinny: Booms from Picatinny

ROXBURY, NJ - Police today assured residents that explosions heard and felt throughout the area are nothing to worry about, just routine tests taking place at Picatinny Arsenal.

The testing of armaments, explosives and other things that make noise is routine activity at the military complex, situated in Jefferson and Rockaway Township, police said. Nevertheless, local authorities sometimes find themselves deluged with phone calls when residents hear the booms. Today was one of those days.

"Throughout the course of the day, the Denville Police Department as well as other police departments in the surrounding towns, have been receiving numerous reports of loud explosions that can be both heard and felt by residents," said Denville Police in a statement. "It has now been determined that the cause of these explosions was testing being conducted at Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Township."

Police said people have "no reason for concern."

They said officials at Picatinny Arsenal advised them that "testing is conducted on an almost daily basis, but atmospheric and/or other conditions can sometimes result in the explosions being felt over a wide spread area."

It Began With Filling Your Tank; Now They Fix Your Grandson’s Car

When we drive east on Route 10 through Roxbury, many of us might remember a Shell station at the Randolph border next to the golf range. It was in that station that Nancy and Peyton Knight began their long history of auto repair in the township.

That was 1983 and soon the Knights’ business grew and expanded. The humble gas station gradually morphed into a state-of-the-art ...
