ROXBURY, NJ - (Updated 5:30 p.m.) A fatal accident on Route 80 in Mount Olive at about 10:20 a.m. - one that involved a loaded school bus from Paramus - forced the closure of the highway, prompting Roxbury police to warn drivers to stay away from the area much of the day Thursday.
A witness said the eastbound school bus appeared to have been hit by a dump truck, which was severely damaged. The body of the bus was almost completely torn off the vehicle's frame.
Police have not released detailed information, but the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said several people were killed. "The exact number and the identity of each individual is being withheld at this time pending formal notification of kin," said the prosecutor's office late in the afternoon.
The bus was carrying middle school students on a field trip to Waterloo Village. The bus had about 45 passengers.
