ROXBURY, NJ – Delayed six months due to COVID-19, the Roxbury High School volleyball team’s season got off to a good start this week with a victory Tuesday over Mount Olive.
The 2-1 win saw senior Hayley Miller rack up 12 service points while classmate Juliana Medini and junior Isabella Chan both scored nine. Chan was also credited with making 15 digs and sophomore Victoria Latino chalked up 13 kills.
Coach Anthony McMichael is happy with the team’s work ethic and enthusiasm.
“In all of my years of coaching at Roxbury and at Dover, I have never had a more enjoyable pre-season experience than I've had the past three weeks,” he said. “Our practices have focused heavily on technical development and fundamentals, and the girls have responded very well with positive changes in their footwork patterns and improvements in random gameplay situations.”
McMichael acknowledged the Gaels, who play West Morris Central today, will face tough competition.
“NJ.com currently has us ranked #14 in the state out of more than 300 teams,” he said. “We play in arguably the strongest conference/division in New Jersey: The NJAC-American. Sparta is currently ranked #13 and Mendham is currently ranked #16 in the state.”
McMichael said he is counting on his experienced players to spark the underclassmen. “We have a tremendous group of senior leaders who always do the right things right and are an amazing inspiration to the younger girls in our program,” he said. “The girls have been working extraordinarily hard in practice. We believe that the only way to get better is through hard work.”
The coach said he also has high hopes for the junior varsity players.
“Our JV team is very young and athletic,” McMichael said. “Our JV team is composed of freshman and sophomore players, and they are led by Coach Alison Correnti, who is one of the best technical coaches in New Jersey. We have a very bright future beyond this spring and fall.”
