ROXBURY, NJ - The Roxbury High School football team escaped having a winless season Thursday with a season finale victory over Chatham.

Playing at home, the Gaels defeated the Cougars 7-0. The touchdown, late in the third quarter, came on a 1-yard run by senior Jacob Fichter. Luke Schabel put the ball through the goalposts for the extra point.

“While the season didn’t go exactly as we wanted, I wouldn’t have done it with anyone else and I’m glad we ended like this,” Fichter said after the game. The Gaels' final record is 1-6.

Chatham had twin chances to get into the end zone during the final minute, but failed.

Cougar Finn Torkelson made an over-the-shoulder catch, was pulled down on top of a Roxbury defender and nearly pulled a Houdini escape in taking the ball into the end zone. The score would have ended Chatham's long scoring drought and put the Cougars within an extra point of tying the game (see video below) in the final minute of the fourth quarter.

But Finn was ruled down on the play at the eight-yard line so that left it up to his twin brother, Duncan Torkelsonwho took quarterback Giovanni Del Re's fourth-down pass and fell on it in the end zone (see below).

The play to Duncan Torkelson was ruled incomplete and that's how the 7-0 win for Roxbury and the 2020 season ended.

“It ended on a great note with the best teammates anyone can ask for," said Gaels senior Marcanthony Scalera.

His teammate, Nick Mastandrea, said he was proud of the way the Gaels endured week-after-week of tough losses. “I loved this team's desire to keep competing throughout the whole season, even through the tough times,” he said. It was a sentiment echoed by others.

"On the surface, this season may seem unsuccessful," said Lucas Spitzer. "However, every player brought a positive attitude and great work ethic each day. I’m proud to be a Gael.”
