ROXBURY, NJ – Roxbury High School ice hockey player Billy Hefferle gave the struggling team something to celebrate this week when he became the all-time points record for the school.

The senior’s assist in a game against Morris Knolls on Wednesday brought his points total to 185. The prior record of 184 points was set in 1994 by Brian Martin.

During the 5-4 loss to Morris Knolls, a defeat that brought the team’s record to 4-11-1, Hefferle made two goals and two assists.

“With his two goals and two assists last night, Billy now sits at 187 points and counting,” said Roxbury High School Ice Hockey Coach Jonathan Benbow on Thursday. “I have had the pleasure of watching Billy play since he was 10, and as a coach, I am so proud of the player and young man that he has become.”

Benbow said he’s enjoyed coaching the 5-foot, 7-inch, 165-pound skater, but pointed out that much of Hefferle’s success is due to the young man’s personality.

“Billy is an extremely driven and dedicated athlete that works hard on perfecting his craft both on and off the ice,” said the coach. “This scoring record is a product of his work ethic, skill and commitment to a game he loves.”

Benbow also stressed that Hefferle is not a grandstander; he understands that hockey is a team sport.

“Billy would be the first to share the credit with his teammates and tell you he just loves to play the game,” Benbow said. “Billy has been a great leader in our program for the last four years and is obviously one of the most skilled players to ever put on a Gaels jersey.  It is great to see so much hard work pay off for Billy.”

During Wednesday’s game, another of the Gaels’ points was scored by Hefferle’s brother Nick. Ethan Barooah also scored while Johnny Facchini contributed with three assists.

The Gaels found themselves in a tough situation early on as the Golden Eagles went into the second period with a 3-1 lead. Roxbury fought back with two goals in the second frame and another in the fourth, but Morris Knolls scored single goals in both periods, enough to take the win.

Roxbury goaltender Tyler Marston made 24 saves.

The Gaels next play on Monday against Morristown.
