ROXBURY, NJ - The Roxbury High School ice hockey team returned to the win column Tuesday night with a hard-fought team effort. The much-needed win against Kinnelon came after two poorly-played losses last week to Ramapo and Madison.
Although they fell behind 1-0 in the first period in Tuesday's contest, the Gaels kept skating hard and applying pressure. That effort paid off early in the second period when Joe Carey scored the tying goal, with assists from Nick Thomas and Brian Westergaard.
Kinnelon goalie Brett Lewis kept the Colts in the game, turning away 43 of 44 shots. But with three minutes to go in the third period, shot 45 got by him.
The game winner was scored by Ethan Barooah with assists from Joe Carey and Gavin Woudenberg. The consistently steady Ryan Callahan was excellent in goal again for Roxbury, stopping 16 of 17 shots.
The win moves Roxbury to 5-0 in the division and 7-3-1 overall. The Gaels next opponent is Morristown on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. at Mennen Arena.
