ROXBURY, NJ - Having started the season with four consecutive wins, but then losing the next three games, the Roxbury High School ice hockey team needed a win. It got one Tuesday with an 8-1 pounding of Montville.
The 5-3 Gaels dominated the 1-2-1 Mustangs, barring any scoring until the final period when Montville's Owen O'Hara scored at 13:11.
Roxbury took charge early, scoring twice in the first period; one, on a power play, by Jake Kooyenga and a second by Nick Thomas. Joe DiDomenico scored in the second period.
But it was the final frame when the Gaels really turned on the jets with one goal by Brian Westergaard, two by Thomas, one by Randy DePalma and another by Jake Calanni.
Roxbury goaltender Ryan Callahan blocked 17 Mustang shots during the game.
Prior to today's win, the Gaels were shutout 6-0 on Feb. 12 by Madison,a team they are scheduled to play again on Feb. 19.
The loss to Madison followed a 5-4 loss on Feb. 11 to Mendham and a 4-1 defeat on Feb. 3 to West Essex.
Roxbury is now third in the Halvorsen Division.
