ROXBURY, NJ - Roxbury and West Morris Central high school hockey fans, friends and families were treated to some dynamic action last Friday at the 5^th Annual Jason Tannenholz Memorial Charity Game.

A standing-room-only crowd at the SportsCare Arena in Randolph watched the Dec. 30 game, a contest that was originally scheduled for November but was postponed due to a change in the high school ice hockey schedule.

Although the Wolfpack won, giving the Gaels their first loss of the season, the real winner of the game was the Coach Jason Tannenholz Scholarship Fund.

The annual Memorial Game, which began in 2018, is named in honor of Jason Tannenholz, a coach and teacher from Eisenhower Middle School who passed away from lung cancer on Sept. 29 of that year. The game raises funds for a scholarship program, started by the Tannenholz family, that awards graduating Roxbury senior ice hockey players who played at least two seasons on the junior varsity team.

During Friday’s game, fans participated in multiple activities to raise funds for the scholarship. West Morris Ice Hockey also graciously made a $250 donation to the program.

The scholarship will be awarded in March during Roxbury’s annual Ice Hockey Banquet.**BULLSEYE

Those who came to this year’s charity game witnessed some great hockey action. For three periods, the Gaels and the Wolfpack battled in a close contest that found the teams tied or separated by one goal.

The Wolfpack scored first on a power play goal with 15 seconds left in the first period. Three minutes into the second period, Roxbury junior defenseman Gavin Barooah scored Roxbury’s first goal to tie the game, with an assist from sophomore Ryan Van Zile. Two minutes later, West Morris scored again to take the lead 2-1 going into the third period.

In the third period, Roxbury senior Jake Calanni scored on a power play, assisted by Barooah, to tie the game in the early minutes. However, the Wolfpack scored a goal on a power play to take a 3 -2 lead and eventually chalked up a fourth goal to end the game with a score of 4-2.**STANDARD

Roxbury sophomore goalie Mike Guadagnino made 32 saves against a formidable West Morris offense that put 36 shots on goal. Likewise, Roxbury had 31 shots on goals against the senior West Morris goalie.

Roxbury is now 5-1. The team next takes on Whippany Park on Jan. 6.
