ROXBURY, NJ – A big win and a tie marked the closing games of 2017 for the Roxbury High School ice hockey team which goes into the new year with a 2-9-1 record.
The Gaels, who dealt with many close-game losses this year, trounced Robbinsville on Dec. 29 with a 10-1 blowout and came back the next day to hold their own against St. Joseph High School of Metuchen with a 3-3 tie in the Essex Holiday Tournament.
The Robbinsville contest, at Aspen Ice in Randolph, saw two goals and five assists from Roxbury’s Billy Hefferle. He wasn’t the only Gael with multiple goals as Nicholas Hefferle, Shane Miller and Erik Zecevic also scored twice. Adding to the 10 points were goals by Ethan Barooah and Nick Thomas.
Goalie Tyler Marston made 15 saves.
Miller and Billy Hefferle were back at it on Saturday against the St. Joe’s Falcons; Miller found the net twice. Marston made 19 saves that day.
The Gaels’ shot at turning around their season continues Jan. 5 when they take on Morristown-Beard at 4:15 p.m. at Mennen Sports Arena.
