ROXBURY, NJ - The Roxbury High School ice hockey team started its 2019/2020 season with a dominating 7-1 win over Sparta/Jefferson on Thursday.
Playing at Mennen Arena, Brian Westergaard started the scoring with the first goal of the season, with assists from Nick Hefferle and Joe DiDomenico.
The next two goals were scored by Joe Carey with assists from Kevin Keane. Nick Hefferle added a goal at the end of the first period, with assists from Brian Westergaard and Nick Thomas.
The second period saw Hefferle add two more goals for a hat trick, with Nick Thomas and Westergaard assisting on both.
The Gaels added their final goal in the third period, with Carey scoring his third of the game for a hat trick too, with assists from Ethan Barooah andThomas.
Ryan Callahan was fantastic in goal, stopping all 15 shots he faced. Although he was not credited with a shutout, due to an error by the referee, Callahan made that save on a shot in the third period. The referee blew the whistle, Ryan relaxed and then the puck trickled in. It was such an obvious error, that Roxbury's Coach Benbow picked up a bench minor penalty trying to explain his case in support of his goaltender.
Roxbury's next game is Saturday night, December 7 at 8 p.m. at Skylands Arena against Vernon.
