ROXBURY, NJ – The Roxbury Junior Gaels Varsity football team did it again: It brought the Morris County Youth Football League (MCYFL) championship title back home for the Iron Division.
The undefeated 8th-graders beat their fierce competition, the Newton Braves, 30-6 on Saturday to win the championship. The Braves were undefeated in their division, with one loss to Roxbury in a non-conference game.
During the battle, Roxbury took the lead early and never looked back.
“Words can’t express the excitement that was shared on and off that field,” said one parent. “There is something special about this team. You just watch them know they are one unit, with multiple layers of talent. Whether they played together for the last six years or just joined the team, they all just meld and bring on the victories.”
While celebrating the victory, the coaches expressed gratitude to the team and parents for allowing them to coach through the years. “I couldn't be more proud of them,” said head coach Dean Campiglia. “How happy I am for them. Football, unlike any other sport, is one of teamwork, athleticism and mental toughness, and as the years have gone by these boys are realizing that.”
Campiglia said he’s excited about the future as the boys move on to Roxbury High School
“Some of them have been there from the start six years ago and others have joined throughout the seasons,” he said. “These boys are more than ready to make the transition to high school football. If they stick together, they - along with us - are in for another great 4-year ride.”
