ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Four Roxbury High School wrestlers competed in the unofficial tournament of year this weekend at the 2018 NJSIAA Individual Wrestler State Championship at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Franco Mazza (106 pounds), Scott Jarosz (138 pounds), Dominick LaRusso (145 pounds) and Michael Roumes (160 pounds) earned bids into the tournament by placing in the Top 4 of last week’s Region 2 event.
Roumes had the most successful weekend in the Roxbury contingency. The senior beat Region 3 winner, Kieran Calvetti (Delbarton) in the opening round by a 2-1 decision. He then dropped a 4-3 decision to Hanover Park’s Matt Liberato in the second round.
Facing an uphill battle in the consolation bracket, Roumes won two wrestleback matches to put him into medal contention. Needing one more victory to earn a spot on the Top 8 podium, Roumes lost a 16-6 major decision to Colonia’s John Poznanski. Roumes’ final season at Roxbury ended with a 24-9 record.
LaRusso found himself two wins away from a medal. After losing in the first round of the tournament, he won his first two consolation bracket bouts, before dropping a 2-0 decision at the hands of Middletown North’s Stanley Wojdylak. LaRusso completes the year with a record of 36-11.
Jarosz also lost in the first round, but advanced to the second wrestleback round the by virtue of a forfeit. In the second consolation match, Jarosz took Princeton’s Alec Bobchin to overtime, before losing 3-1 in the first sudden victory period. He closes the season at 35-11.
Mazza, a freshman who came into the weekend as the No. 24 seed after a third place finish in regions, dropped his first two matches, including a 3-2 decision in the first round of wrestlebacks, to end his tournament on Saturday morning. Mazza finishes his freshman year at 31-14.
