ROXBURY, NJ – Headed to Sussex County on Thursday to take on Newton, the Roxbury High School wrestling team hopes to bring its record on the season to 3-1.
Coming off a 66-9 trouncing of another Sussex County team, Lenape Valley, on March 19, the Gaels will take on the Braves at 6 p.m. Roxbury’s sole loss so far came on March 18 when it fell to Jefferson 40-33.
Coach Dan Roman said the Gaels roster includes wrestlers who bring to the mat a good deal of grappling know-how. “We are a young team, but we have a lot of experience,” said Roman, now in his second year as head coach.
Returning letter-winners include seniors Franco Mazza, Thomas Conselyea, Sander Silva and Matt Knapp, juniors Alex Poissant and Alex Silva and sophomore Luke Stanich.
“We have a returning state place winner, and state qualifier, with two other returning region qualifiers and other talented wrestlers spread throughout the lineup,” Roman said.
He said he has high hopes for several newcomers to the varsity squad, including juniors Christian Castro and Michael Murphy.
The Gaels finished the 2019-2020 season with a 4-15 record. They placed 13th in the Morris County Tournament and finished third in District 6.
“Our numbers are low, but we will be very competitive,” the coach said. “The kids have been working extremely hard in the room, and they are excited to rebound from last season.”
