ROXBURY, NJ – Boosted by a nice tailwind down the closing stretch, Succasunna resident Justin Scheid on Monday blasted through the Roxbury Community Benefit 5K to come in first and set a race record.
Scheid, 33, chewed up the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes and 17 seconds. That’s two seconds faster than the course record set in 2014 by Youseff Rochdi.
The first female across the finish line Monday was also a Succasunna resident: 14-year-old Gabriella Daskalova who, maintaining a 6:18 pace, finished at 19:34.
“It was a nice temperature today,” Sheid said. “A little windy but not bad.”
Scheid and Daskalova were among nearly 400 people who showed up at Eisenhower Middle School for the annual race, an event that raises money for Roxbury community programs. TAPinto Roxbury served as media sponsor for the race and the list of other sponsors included TAPinto Roxbury advertisers Dezine Line, Bill Clinton/Edward Jones Investments and the Roxbury Diner.
The event saw participation by a wide variety of runners and walkers. Among them was 23-year-old George Ulbrich of Flanders who – despite cerebral palsy – walked the course for the second consecutive year.
“Having cerebral palsy can be a challenge,” he said after finishing and taking a seat in his wheelchair. He praised his fellow members of the “Run for God” team out of Grace Church on the Mount in Netcong.
“Their support and love was absolutely amazing,” said Ulbrich, noting the Run for God team prepared for the 5K with a 12-week training program. “Nobody treated me like I have cerebral palsy,” he added.
Race director Jim Schulz was hoping the event, hosted by the Morris County Striders running club, would raise about $7,000 to be distributed among Roxbury High School Project Graduation, Roxbury DayCare Center, Roxbury Rescue Squad and Fire Department, the Kiwanis Scholarship Fund, Roxbury Social Services, the Roxbury Public Library and the Saint Therese Building Fund.
