5 Hot Tips To Help You Keep Your Cool If You’re Moving This Summer

Ah yes, it’s summertime and the living is easy, unless, of course, you’re moving!

Moving can be stressful during any season but add heat and humidity to the mix and tasks can become more formidable — even cool cucumbers can feel fried. Here are tips to help you keep your cool if you’re moving this summer.

Secure a Mover
As soon as you can, schedule an appointment with one or two movers to get an estimate. You will have a better idea both of your budget and of what you really need to take to your new home. At this time, reserve dates for packing and moving with the company. (Note that summertime is the busiest time of year for household moving, especially at the end of each month!)

Have a Sale
If time allows, host a yard or garage sale. Sort through items you haven’t packed asking yourself if you really want it in your new home. Secure necessary permits, advertise the sale, and price items to sell. Whatever doesn’t go, donate to local thrift or consignment shops.

Take Care
Make plans to take special care of older and little people. Consider booking a hotel room for them to hang out in during the move (or ask a friend to provide an air-conditioned room). Find doggie daycare or secure a cat carrier for your pets. This way, all members of your family will be protected from high outdoor temperatures and Fido and Fifi will be less likely to take advantage of that inviting open door to the outside.

Stay Hydrated
Fight fatigue and heat exhaustion by adding cold water, hydrating drinks, and light snacks to your moving checklist. Take breaks when moving, packing, or unpacking boxes, especially those that are particularly heavy. Take care of your movers, too. In addition to providing refreshing water and cool drinks, keep chilled damp towels on hand. Find a shady spot in your yard and set up chairs so your movers can take a break from the sun.

Protect Perishables
Certain items won’t fare well in a hot moving truck and should be taken with you in the car, or packed extremely carefully. Candles, aerosols, chocolates, and electronic devices all fit into this category.

It’s not cost-effective to move food. Try to use up everything in your pantry and freezer. Check expiration dates on things you’ve had for a while to make sure they’re still safe to eat. Consider donating excess non-perishable items to a food pantry. Or, contact Move for Hunger, which coordinates pick up of non-perishable food items that would otherwise be thrown away.

Once you have the keys to your new home and have unpacked, run through the sprinkler or pour yourself a tall refreshing beverage and chill. And, if the stress of moving day seems too daunting, consider hiring a move manager
