SCOTCH PLAINS-- Alfonso's Pizzeria's long time owner Angelo Zanfardino has stepped away from the business he owned and ran for over 50 years and, according to the new owners, will be retiring to Rehoboth Beach, DE.
The pizzeria/restaurant is owned and operated by the Peterpaul family, siblings Frank, Anthony and Michelle, who are known in town as the owners of Grillestone on Route 22. They are currently running the establishment with its Alfonso's menu and will begin the changeover through the coming weeks. The business will become Grano's Pizzeria & Italian Tavern under the new ownership.
As part of the rebranding, the Peterpaul's will make aesthetic changes to the restaurant, update the menu with some classic family recipes and rustic Italian cuisine, and increase the bar size to welcome anyone and everyone from individuals looking for a quick slice and a drink, and families who desire a nice sit down, Italian style meal experience.
“We're excited to be part of downtown Scotch Plains and to be serving the local community. We hope they are ready for some good Italian food,” said Frank Peterpaul.
Scotch Plains Mayor Al Smith said he spoke with Angelo Zanfardino to wish him well and stopped in to welcome the new owners.
“I wished him a happy retirement,” Smith said. "He spoke very highly of the town and said he is sure the new owners will do a great job."
Downtown Redevelopment Coordinator Tom Strowe said: “I am glad this tradition is continuing, I look forward to this great new addition to town and all it will bring here. It's happening.”
