SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Senior Timmy Geissel pitched a one-hitter and hot-hitting Spencer Vaughn went 3-for-3 with three runs scored as the Raiders blanked Union, 10-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Union County baseball tournament at home on Wednesday.
Raider bats have awakened as the team scored in double digits for the second game in a row. Jake Canavan went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Patrick Downey tripled in a run, and Peter Warren went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Dren Gocaj got the only hit, a double, against Geissel, who threw just 67 pitches to earn his fifth complete game victory. The lefty ace has a 3-3 record on the year and a microscopic 1.32 ERA.
The Raiders (9-7) host Cranford on Thursday in a regular season game. On Saturday, the rivals will meet again in Cranford for the semifinals of the Union County Tournament.
Cranford and SPF are the highest remaining seeds in the tournament after top-seeded Gov. Livingston was upset by Arthur L. Johnson of Clark, 9-5, in the quarterfinals.
