Baseball: Scotch Plains-Fanwood Tops Westfield, 9-3, in Season Opener

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- In the Raiders' season baseball opener, lefty starter Tim Geissel struck out seven in a 9-3 complete game victory over arch rival Westfield at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. It is the Raiders' third straight Opening Day victory over Westfield.

The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead on a single and a passed ball. Westfield touched up Geissel in the third inning by scoring two runs to tie the game. However, the lefty battled back and retired the side with the bases loaded.

A five-run fifth put the game on ice for Scorch Plains-Fanwood.

Colin McAlindin (three RBI) and Peter Yarem (one RBI) each had two hits. McAlindin's two-run single in the fourth inning gave SP-F a 4-2 lead. Geissel helped his own cause with a RBI double in the fifth inning. Patrick Downey notched his first varsity hit and stole a base.
